‘Design Your Own Garden’
Do you have ideas for a new garden but are not quite sure how to ‘put it all together’? Or perhaps your garden looks out-dated and is in need of a makeover? A design coaching session can help you solve problems like these .
In a design coaching session we work together at my drawing table on new plans for your garden. Collaboratively we create a unique and distinctive design--combining your ideas and personality with my knowledge and expertise.
Getting ready
A little advance preparation, with my guidance, will ensure our time together is truly productive. Before we get together face-o-face, we will define the scope of your coaching session project. This could be anything from creating a spatial design in harmony with your land, to choosing the best plants for a new bed.
Then consider what you want this project to accomplish--make your own personal ‘wish list’.
Think too about your land. What are its opportunities and what are its problems?
Now go outside and record some specifics that will shape your new design:
--Take measurements and lots of photographs of the area encompassing your project. (I will mail you directions on how to do this.)
--Identify the growing conditions: which areas are sunny or shady, wet or dry, windy or sheltered, and what type of soil do you have.
--Note the location of your utilities and anything else that might impact your design.
Send your photographs and measurements to me ahead of time and I will draw up a base plan--a scale drawing of what is there today--which will become the starting point for your coaching session.
Your coaching session
Using your base plan, we will experiment--on paper and to scale--with different possibilities for your new garden. Along the way I will offer suggestions and advice for all aspects of the design. We will consider the spatial design and the best plants to complement that design.
By the end of our session you will have a ‘ready to go’ plan for your new garden.
My garden: a living teaching aid
During your time here my personal garden is available for you to peruse. It is a large garden, incorporating a wide variety plants that thrive in our climate.
As you consider different plants for your own garden, and how to combine them together, you can quickly check out what they look like here--in particular how big they grow and how they contribute to the entire effect.
Logistics
Design coaching sessions are for one person, or for two people working together on a single plan.
I charge just for the amount of time I spend on your project so that, depending on the scope of your project, the total cost for developing a new design may range from $200 to $500.
Design coaching sessions are held in my Goshen home (click here for directions) at any mutually agreeable time and are normally completed on a single day.
